In 1999, when I took my oath of office, I began following through with my campaign promises. One of which was to "help ensure the safety of our citizens".

BF2 0603I began visiting with the HCISD administration in the late spring of 1999 to request that they give me an opportunity to create the program for our students. It took approximately one and a half full years of speeches, meetings with many different facets throughout the district: Superintendent, CLT, DLT, Parents, Faculty, Staff, and other to convince them that Shattered Dreams is definitely a worthwhile program. If it saves one life, it was worth months of planning, multiple agencies volunteering, funds out of pocket and donated and 2 days of curriculum.

It came to fruition and our 1st Shattered Dreams Program was held in 2001 for the students of Hays High School.

We held it again a couple years later and have developed a pattern, alternating between HHS/Live Oak Academy and Lehman HS every 3 years. The students catch it as a freshman, and then we hit it home again as they are seniors.

We will never know how many lives the presentations have actually saved, but only one is worth it.

After the 2008 presentation, I was nominated, and won the statewide Catalyst Award for the program. This would have not been possible without the volunteerism, hard work and donations of the many citizens and businesses involved.

I was asked, and participated as the Justice of the Peace for the San Marcos Baptist Academy in their program. Our team walked them through the program to be able to present there.

I can honestly say, that the Shattered Dreams Program that we present for our students at Hays is one of the top notch programs in Texas! Small things change every presentation to make sure it's better than the last.

It will be presented for Hays High School and Live Oak Academy in the Spring of 2014.
